Get Started with Monero
Simple, safe step-by-step guide for beginners (January 2026). Always verify everything from official sources!
- Download a Wallet
Go to the official site: getmonero.org/downloads.
Choose the **GUI Wallet** (easiest for most people) or Feather Wallet (lightweight, fast).
Download for your OS (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, etc.).
- Install & Create Your Wallet
Run the installer → Select "Create a new wallet".
**Very important:** Write down your 25-word seed phrase on paper and store it offline (never take a photo or save digitally!). This is your only way to recover your funds if something goes wrong.
- Sync the Blockchain
The wallet needs to download the full Monero blockchain (this can take several hours or even days the first time).
For a faster start, you can use a **remote node** (in wallet settings → enter a public node like node.moneroworld.com:18089).
Later, run your own node for maximum privacy (see "Download Node" button on dashboard).
- Buy XMR Privately (Recommended: No KYC)
To keep your privacy, avoid centralized exchanges.
Best options right now (2026):
• Haveno → decentralized P2P (haveno.exchange)
• Bisq → fully open-source P2P (bisq.network)
• Atomic swaps (BTC → XMR directly in wallet)
Start with a small amount to test the process.
- Secure & Start Using It
Run your own node when possible.
Use Tor or I2P for extra connection privacy.
Test everything: Send a tiny amount to yourself or a friend first.
Join the community on Reddit (r/Monero) or Matrix for help if needed.
Key Privacy Rules:
• Never store large amounts on exchanges — they track your activity.
• Always self-custody your XMR (you control the keys).
• Verify every download with PGP signatures from the official site.
• Keep your seed phrase safe and offline forever.
